I have offered cosmetic dermatology services in Victoria, BC for many years, and one of the most common sources of confusion for my patients is the difference between Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and laser treatments. Although IPL can be used to correct some of the same conditions as lasers, it uses different technology and is intended for specific purposes.
Different Technology
IPL relies on broad-spectrum photothermal light energy to enact changes in the skin. This energy consists of a wide range of wavelengths, which allows IPL to target multiple things in the skin at once. Lasers, on the other hand, utilize a single wavelength and are typically directed at a very specific target.
Varied Indications
As mentioned earlier, IPL and lasers can be used to treat some of the same conditions. However, IPL is especially helpful for people who want to improve multiple signs of sun damage such as sunspots, freckles, and dilated capillaries on face, neck, hands, or chest. IPL is also an excellent option for reducing redness or the look of facial veins and vessels, for example in those with rosacea.
Custom Results
Both IPL and lasers deliver exceptional results when performed properly by an experienced, trained professional. IPL treatments typically require less downtime than more invasive laser procedures, such as a CO2 laser. However, your treatment can usually be customized to shorten your recovery time if necessary.
